Educational Technology
As a school, the New Mexico School for the Deaf provides a comprehensive, fully accessible and language-rich learning environment where children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing can reach their maximum potential. Technology has the potential to level the playing field for our Deaf/Hard of Hearing students in that it gives unprecedented visual access to information and language/communication. Moreover, technology creates career opportunities that did not previously exist for our Deaf students. NMSD is committed to maximizing the use of technology as it relates to increasing its students' knowledge, skills, and career preparation.
Our students and teachers will more efficiently and effectively create and manage information and language/communication access. Students will have the needed access to a variety of software and hardware necessary to meet their learning and development needs.
Each of NMSD's classrooms is equipped with 2-3 computers and one laser jet printer. All computers are networked with a high speed Internet connection. Students from grades 7-12 also participate in a laptop program where they receive their own laptop for use at both school and home. Each department has access to a mobile lab if additional laptops are needed. In addition, NMSD's students and teachers have access to other technology listed below:
- Distance Educational Services (videoconferencing)
- Digital cameras
- Digital camcorders
- LCD projectors
- InterWrite Boards
- Document readers
- Multimedia room & labs- creating movies
- Video relay & Videophone access
- Internet access
- Vast array of educational software
Additionally, each of NMSD's residential units is equipped with 2-3 computers and network access to a laser jet printer. Standard software is available on each computer. These computers provide our students with needed technology access for homework projects, report writing, research, and communication via email with parents, staff, other students or siblings. NMSD has a Media Specialist, two Information Technology Specialists, and a Technology Teacher who assist teachers in grades K-12, offering training, consultation and general support in order to ensure staff and students continue to stay knowledgeable and current with state-of-the-art technology. In this ever-changing world that is increasingly dependent on technology, it is more vital than ever that students are prepared to deal with technology in the real world.
