GPSD Update as of 1:17pm

Boys Varsity Basketball results: NMSD vs. Arkansas W 50 to 25

Girls Play tonight.

GPSD Update from February 9, 2012:

And day #1 of the GPSD tournament is over. It was a long day, filled with ups and downs for our squads.

We started our morning with an impressive performance from our trio of girls- Amberley Luna, Kimberly Herrera and Rosina Garcia. They calmly and effectively captured the three point contest with a 18-point score (3 for Herrera, 2 for Luna and 1 for Garcia).

The momentum carried over to the girls' game against Oklahoma. NMSD parlayed a 12-0 1st quarter run into a 46-14 win. 5 players entered the scoring column, led by 21 from Herrera. Caldonia Wilding had a nice performance, with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Margaret Appa enjoyed a strong 4th quarter, with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Garcia energized the offense with 9 assists, and also had 3 blocks. NMSD faces Iowa tomorrow at 5pm for a spot in the championship game on Saturday.

The NMSD boys tied for 2nd place in the 3-point contest, behind a 3 out of 5 performance by Ever Mendoza.

The NMSD and Oklahoma boys' game was exciting, fast, physical and intense. Oklahoma raced to a 9-0 lead, but NMSD closed the gap to end the 1st quarter 9-10. NMSD took a 1-point lead after the 2nd quarter, but Oklahoma's 34 points after halftime hurt NMSD, as we were only able to manage 18 points. Oklahoma eked out the win 49-42.

NMSD had different players step up throughout the game. Andrick Carroll's offensive play in the first half kept NMSD alive, as he entered the locker room at halftime with 12 points. Mendoza took over in the 3rd quarter, with several timely three pointers. Tyrel Wilding finished with 10 points.

Zachery Lee finished with 10 rebounds and 5 steals. Carroll also had 6 rebounds and 5 steals.

NMSD faces Arkansas tomorrow morning at 9:30 after both teams compete in the free throw contest.

Thanks for all your support. Go Roadrunners!

Varsity Boys Basketball (5-9)

NMSD vs. Desert Academy W 54 - 45 (Game held on February 2nd.)

After being tied at half time at 23 points, we worked on team bonding and brought home the V. Zachery Lee put in 17, Andrick Carroll followed with 11 and Ty Wilding added 10. Role players stepped up when they were needed. Our next game is vs. Waldorf on the 7th.

Academic Bowl

NMSD vs. California School for the Deaf, Riverside

We lost 22-26 in a heartbreaker on Monday, January 23rd. We could not rally in the final round as we should have given the easy topic of the final round. We always do not so well vs. CSDR via videophone matches, but when we play them in live matches, we usually beat them! Go figure… Season series: 0-1.

NMSD vs. Kansas-SD

We lost 37-40 on Thursday January, 26th. KSD extracted revenge on our defeating them three weeks ago. It was a tied game all the way until the end when they edged us in the final round. We were balanced in our scoring. Season series: 1-1.

NMSD vs. Texas-SD

We won 44-28 last Monday, January 30th. TSD has been a good team in last few years, and we were able to start and finish strong. Paige and others were able to beat TSD to the buzzer for some answers, which was a factor in building a 20-4 lead after first two rounds. Season series: 1-0.

NMSD vs. Model Secondary School for the Deaf

We played MSSD on Thursday, February 2nd. MSSD, without a question, will be looking to show us how determined they are after we defeated them in the semifinals in the national tournament last year. MSSD retains their top 4 players from last year and have acquired another top-caliber player from other school (getting Tucson Public Schools District’s Eric Clapton, who was a thorn in our side for last few years). Season series: 0-0. Update: MSSD was quick with 1st round buzz-ins. They jumped to a lead and retained it until the end. We were able to match them in 2nd and 3rd round. The final score was 32-54. We will be playing them again in 3 weeks.

In my opinion, we have a tough schedule this year, playing powerhouses University HS, CSDR, TSD, ASDB, MSSD, Maryland-SD, and KSD this year. I think Iowa-SD also will give us a challenge, as well! It is important that our team must experience hard-earned victories and the bitter tastes of defeat to toughen them up for the nationals.
