Title: Coordinator of Student Health Services

Reports to: Superintendent

Employment Information: Exempt

Salary Range: Depends on Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications:

Possession of a valid, current New Mexico license as a registered nurse and a Bachelor's degree in nursing or related area in health education. Three to five years of increasingly responsible leadership experience related to administration of student health services; recent successful experience as a health care provider in an educational setting; demonstrated progressively responsible and successful experience in health education and health promotion activities; demonstrated successful experience in the supervision of health care professionals; demonstrated commitment to serving students with diverse backgrounds, interests, goals, and abilities. Must be proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) or committed to attaining proficiency. Must possess a current and valid New Mexico driver’s license.

Primary Duties:

Under the general direction of the Superintendent of NMSD, provides leadership and direction for the school’s medical, nursing and student wellness services; and the Student Health Services department and directs, supervises and evaluates staff. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

1. Work with the medical service providers to develop protocols for the administration of all medications, including over the counter medications.

2. Work with the medical service providers to develop protocols for management of basic first aid, screenings, immunizations and other nursing duties.

3. Coordinate and/or support school wide student health and wellness services encompassing relevant areas such as Student Life, Food Services, athletics, instructional and residential departments.

4. Work with outside agencies such as the Santa Fe Indian Hospital, New Mexico Department of Health, Children’s Medical Services, University of New Mexico and others to coordinate medical services as needed.

5. Work with the school’s consulting pharmacist to ensure compliance with New Mexico’s Board of Pharmacy’s rules and regulations necessary to maintain state licensure.

6. Develop Student Health Plans as necessary and facilitate compliance and education of identified staff and students.

7. Direct nursing care of NMSD students.

8. Work as a member of the school’s multidisciplinary evaluation team.

9. Supervise Health Center staff that currently includes a medical director, a nurse practitioner, 3 RNs, an LPN and a department secretary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Well developed clinical and leadership skills and previous management experience in facilitating interdisciplinary model of team collaboration. Specific areas of strength should include:

• Effective bilingual (English and American Sign Language) skills; commitment to securing American Sign Language proficiency as necessary
• Computer literacy and the ability to express relevant concepts clearly in writing.
• Problem solving skills
• Constructive interpersonal skills.
• Flexibility and team-playing skills
• Ability to plan, organize, direct and manage the activities of others.
• Ability to facilitate meetings and negotiate across cultural and work place barriers to reach consensus based outcomes.
• Experience in strategic planning.

Although the above are typical of the duties and responsibilities normally performed, additional duties and responsibilities requiring the same or lesser skills, knowledge and flexibility may be required.
