Title: Deaf Mentor

Reports to: Deaf Mentor Program Coordinator

Employment Information: This is a full-time 11-month position (210 days)

Salary Range: Depending on qualifications and experience

Deadline: Open until filled (Interviews will begin March, 2012)

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Parent/Infant Education, Education of the Deaf or related field. Experience or demonstrated ability in providing Home Based Intervention as well as knowledge relative to child development and family dynamics. Ability to travel frequently within the state. Developmental Specialist Certification through the Department of Health of DSII or higher or ability to attain. Extensive knowledge of and direct experience with Deaf Culture and fluency in ASL, including Bilingual ASL/English skills. Demonstrated understanding of, or ability to learn, the diverse cultures and socio-economic factors in New Mexico. Must have a valid New Mexico Driver’s License. Training in Shared Reading Project or willingness to attain.

Primary Duties:

The Deaf Mentor Program of the New Mexico School for the Deaf provides statewide services to families whose child(ren) are deaf or hard of hearing. These services include the opportunity to work with a deaf or hard of hearing adult on issues such as literacy, language, life skills, and identity. The Deaf Mentor will be working with the Program Coordinator for: intake of families referred; recruitment and training, statewide high-standard service delivery; maintenance of his/her own caseload and timely paperwork; public relations with community and early childhood agencies; collaboration with a variety of stakeholders and supervisor regarding program planning and development.

Although the above are typical of the duties and responsibilities normally performed, additional duties and responsibilities requiring the same or lesser skills, knowledge and dexterity may be required.
