ASL Immersion is an immersion program in American Sign Language (ASL) that allows participants to understand how it feels to depend on one’s eyes rather than one’s ears to communicate and interact with the world. There are periods of instruction, including modeling, creative invention, mime, vocabulary, and of course, sentence structure. Students practice with each other, their teachers, members of the NMSD staff, and visiting members of the Deaf Community. On field trips, they try their skills on the Santa Fe population. Participants leave with a more complete understanding of Deafness and an improved ability to communicate in ASL.
