Family to Family Weekend is packed with family-relevant workshops and ASL learning activities for children and family members. NMSD families and NMSD Outreach families mingle and learn in an informal environment, learning from energetic instructors.
Workshop topics are chosen to address family-specific communication. Family to Family Weekend provides vocabulary and instruction that enhances their communication immediately! While parents attend workshops, deaf and hearing siblings have a chance to play and learn together in a comfortable learning environment. ASL Immersion is an immersion program in American Sign Language (ASL) that allows participants to understand how it feels to depend on one’s eyes rather than one’s ears to communicate and interact with the world. There are periods of instruction, including modeling, creative invention, mime, vocabulary, and of course, sentence structure. Students practice with each other, their teachers, members of the NMSD staff, and visiting members of the Deaf Community. On field trips, they try their skills on the Santa Fe population. Participants leave with a more complete understanding of Deafness and an improved ability to communicate in ASL.
Sign Language Classes
(Please check again for the dates of ASL classes offered in the fall of the 2013-2014 academic year.)
NMSD's Sign Language Classes are provided in order to increase opportunities for access to communication for children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Classes are interactive, challenging and fun. Parents, grandparents, siblings, and other family members benefit from sign instruction. Also welcome are school personnel and other educational stakeholders working with students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Instructors work hard to make learning ASL an enjoyable and beneficial experience.
