OUTREACH EVALUATIONS

Evaluation session with NMSD student. The New Mexico School for the Deaf provides comprehensive evaluation services to students who have a diagnosed hearing loss and are enrolled in their Local Education Agency. in the State of New Mexico. A LEA may pursue such services when it determines that it does not have the resources or specialized staff to conduct an evaluation of a student who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Depending on the needs of the students, which are determined with input from the parents of the child, staff members from the LEA, and the appropriate Outreach Specialist, evaluations are conducted by the Outreach Evaluation Team, which may include an Outreach Specialist, Educational Diagnostician, Audiologist, Speech Language Pathologist, and ASL Specialist. The evaluation domains of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and behavior are typically not addressed by the Outreach Evaluation process, as they are areas that are best addressed locally, in natural contexts.

LEAs can directly access evaluations for students by contacting the NMSD Outreach Specialist in their area. District personnel may also contact NMSD's Outreach Evaluation Coordinator using the contact information below:

Jolee Joos
Outreach Evaluation Coordinator

(505) 490-3499
(800) 841-6699
jolee.joos@nmsd.k12.nm.us

Upon receipt of a request for an evaluation, the Special Education Director at the LEA will be contacted for his/her approval and information before an evaluation is scheduled and paper work is sent to the LEA.

The Outreach Evaluation Team will review all information and determine if NMSD is the appropriate agency to provide the requested evaluation and if so when the student can be scheduled for an evaluation. NMSD Outreach Specialists may be of help in gathering case history information. Please contact the Outreach Specialist in your area if that support is necessary.
