Early Intervention & Involvement: The Parent Infant Child (PIC) Program

PIC student and staff.The Parent Infant Child (PIC) Program is a home-based program for parents and their infants and young children. Services through this program are offered statewide and occur in the child’s most natural learning environment – home and community. The Parent Infant Child Program is a public program and free of cost to New Mexico residents. Services are individually tailored through state and federally regulated practices to meet each child’s and family’s strengths and needs.

Early access to language and communication is critical to a child with a hearing loss.

The Parent Infant Child Program helps your child acquire the communication skills

necessary to:

  • Enjoy a relationship with family members
  • Stay on the developmental pathway
  • Access the world of information
  • Tell you how he feels
  • Describe her dreams
  • Make friends
  • Play

 

Your Child’s Most Important Resource is Your Family
The Parent Infant Child Program is family-centered. Our professional team works with your family to find the strategies, services and technologies that will best support your child’s development and your family's culture and routines.

PIC Student.Eligibility
Any child, age birth to six, who resides in New Mexico and has been diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing, is eligible for the Parent Infant Child Program. Our services are offered at no cost to families.

 

Early Intervention Team Members
The Parent Infant Child Program professionals are trained and experienced in working with families and their young deaf or hard of hearing children. Providers live in, or close to, your community. Your provider will meet with your family at a mutually determined time. Together, you will plan and develop a language-rich environment for your child, in your home and in your community. With early intervention, children who are deaf or hard of hearing can become skilled communicators and have the foundation necessary for future education success.

  • Specialized curricula to develop American Sign Language (ASL) and/or spoken language
  • Access to comprehensive developmental evaluations
  • Spanish and Navajo speaking staff
  • Multiple cooperative agreements with early childhood and state agencies to share resources
  • Service coordination for children ages birth to 3
  • Lending library
  • Transition to school programs
  • Resources and training for chronic otitis media
  • Parent-to-parent network
