About Student Life

Photo of students learning how to make a kite. The Student Life department at the New Mexico School for the Deaf supports the development of each student’s full potential in a safe and nurturing environment.

As a key partner in each student’s education and growth at school, the program provides both residential and day students with quality ongoing access to communication, language and literacy.

Caring staff, who are knowledgeable about child development, plan activities that promote growth in

  • Literacy
  • Leadership
  • Emotional and social skills
  • Self-awareness and self-esteem
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Appreciation for different perspectives
  • Respect for diversity

Students also participate in workshops/mini-lessons related to the Student Development Framework.

The school uses a positive discipline approach, which supports mutual respect, caring and responsibility for one’s behavior and choices.

Frequent communication and collaboration between parents and teachers are high priorities.

Campus Housing

Located in the heart of Santa Fe on a lovely, 30-acre campus, the New Mexico School for the Deaf houses up to 96 residential students who live too far to commute daily. These students range in age from elementary through high school. All residential students return home on weekends. The school provides transportation for students from all over the state.Students sharing a meal made with their own hands.

During the week, under the supervision of trained Student Life Educators, residential students live in new, spacious cottages. The capacity of each fully furnished cottage is 12 students. Each cottage contains:

  • A multi-purpose living room, kitchen and laundry room
  • Six bedrooms, each with private bath and two beds
  • Sleep-time supervision from Residential Night Attendants

For eligible seniors, the school has a focused independent living skills cottage to promote skills for successful post-high school transition.
