ASL Immersion is a concentrated program in American Sign Language (ASL) that allows participants to understand how it feels to depend on one’s eyes rather than one’s ears to communicate and interact with the world. There are periods of instruction, including modeling, creative invention, mime, vocabulary, and of course, sentence structure. Students practice with each other, their teachers, members of the NMSD staff, and visiting members of the Deaf Community. With classes offered for all skill levels, participants leave with improved ability to communicate in ASL and a more complete understanding of Deaf Culture. Two ASL Immersion programs are offered each summer at the end of July.
