Martin Gutierrez - NMSD Alumni and Staff

The New Mexico School for the Deaf is mourning the loss of Martin Gutierrez, a 36-year-old alumnus and longtime staff member who tragically drowned at Conchas Lake on July 26. A graduate of NMSD and a valued member of the school’s maintenance team, Martin was described by his mother, Priscilla Shannon Gutierrez, as “a beam of light” whose warmth, kindness, and sense of humor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Coverage from The Santa Fe New Mexican and KOB highlighted Martin’s deep ties to the Deaf community in Santa Fe and Albuquerque, where he was known and loved. According to reports, he was swimming alone while camping when he was caught in an undercurrent. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

NMSD released a statement saying, “We are heartbroken... Martin was a kind and dedicated member of our NMSD family, first as a student, then as a long-serving staff member. He will be deeply missed.” The community continues to grieve the loss of someone remembered not only for his work but for the joy and integrity he brought to every part of campus life.
